Parastagonosporella

Parastagonosporella M. Bakhshi, Arzanlou & Crous, in Bakhshi et al., Mycol. Progr.: 10.1007/s11557-018-1428-z, [6] (2018).

Index Fungorum number: IF 826900; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08337, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Leaf spots numerous, small, 2–3 mm in diameter, circular to angular, and often merging to form irregular patterns, amphigenous, brown in centre, surrounded by raised dark brown margin, diffuse outward to form a halo. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, dark brown, subepidermal, amphigenous, several in each leaf spot, subglobose, immersed, up to 200 μm in diameter, releasing conidia in creamy to white cirrhi; wall of 4–8 layers of brown textura angularis. Ostiolum central, circular, with papillate neck. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells hyaline, smooth, lining the inner cavity, broadly to narrowly ampulliform to subcylindrical, occasionally phialidic, with prominent periclinal thickening or annellidic, proliferating percurrently with more or less distinct annellations. Conidia hyaline, smooth, thin-walled, scolecosporous, subcylindrical, granular to multiguttulate, with obtuse apex and truncate to subtruncate base (adapted from Bakhshi et al. 2019).

Type species: Parastagonosporella fallopiae M. Bakhshi, Arzanlou & Crous

Notes: Parastagonosporella is characterised by pycnidial, dark brown, subepidermal, amphigenous conidiomata, hyaline, smooth conidiogenous cells, and hyaline, smooth, thin-walled, scolecosporous, subcylindrical conidia. Parastagonosporella resembles Parastagonospora in having pycnidial conidiomata, hyaline, smooth, ampulliform to subcylindrical conidiogenous cells, and euseptate, hyaline, granular to multi-guttulate conidia with truncate bases but differs in having conidiomata with more or less papillate necks and walls of 4–8 layers of brown textura angularis while the latter has a central ostiole and 2–3 layers of brown textura angularis. Parastagonosporella is phylogenetically distinct from Parastagonospora. The ideal molecular marker to differentiate between species of Parastagonosporella are LSU and ITS. Additional useful loci available in GenBank are actA, his3, tef1, rpb2 and cmdA. Parastagonosporella is closely related to the genera Paraphoma, Pseudophaeosphaeria, Setomelanomma and Xenoseptoria. Parastagonosporella differs from Paraphoma in that the latter has ellipsoid and aseptate conidia (Quaedvlieg et al. 2013). Parastagonosporella differs from Pseudophaeosphaeria and Setomelanomma in that the two latter genera comprise sexual species while Parastagonosporella is characterised by the asexual morph. Parastagonosporella differs from Xenoseptoria in that the latter has (1–)3-septate conidia tapering to subobtuse apex and obtuse base (Quaedvlieg et al. 2013). Parastagonosporella is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Phaeosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Parastagonosporella are ITS, LSU, Actin, Calmodulin, Histone, RPB2 and TEF-1.
