Melnikia

Melnikia Wijayaw., Goonas., Bhat & K.D. Hyde, in Wijayawardene et al., Fungal Diversity 77: 162 (2016).

Index Fungorum number: IF 551799; Facesoffungi number: FoF 01528, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Endophytic or saprobic on Poaceae (Monocotyledons). Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, solitary, scattered, subepidermal to immersed, erumpent at maturity, globose, unilocular, brown. Ostiole apapillate, single, circular, central. Conidiomata wall composed of two layers, outer layer thick, composed of thin-walled, brown cells of textura globosa; inner layer thin, hyaline, almost reduced to conidiogenous region. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells enteroblastic, phialidic, ampulliform to rarely lageniform, discrete, determinate, hyaline to pale brown, smooth. Conidia ellipsoidal or rarely slightly sigmoid, straight to slightly curved, both ends rounded or rarely truncate base, phragmosporous, 2–3-transverse septate, constricted at septa, often with small guttules, thick and smooth-walled (adapted from Wijayawardene et al. 2016).

Type species: Melnikia anthoxanthii Wijayaw., Goonas., Camporesi, D.J. Bhat & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Melnikia is characterised by pycnidial, solitary, scattered, subepidermal to immersed conidiomata, enteroblastic, phialidic, ampulliform to rarely lageniform conidiogenous cells, and ellipsoidal or rarely slightly sigmoid, straight to slightly curved conidia. Melnikia resembles Pseudohendersonia in conidial morphology but the latter has eguttulate and brown to dark brown conidia while Melnikia is characterised by guttulate, pale brown to brown conidia. Melnikia is a distinct lineage in Phaeosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Melnikia are LSU and SSU.
