Megacoelomyces
Megacoelomyces Dianese, Guterres, M.D.M. Santos & G.F. Sepúlveda, in Santos et al., Mycologia 113(1): 236 (2021).
Index Fungorum number: IF 835002; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08233, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Saprobic on leaves. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Colonies epiphytic composed of scattered conidiomata on hypophyllous trichomes occurring mostly along the major leaf veins of the host. Conidiomata pycnidial, obclavate, rostrate neck, ostiolate, hypophyllous, superficial, seated on a loose subiculum associated with trichomes, sparcely setose; rostrum ostiolate. Ostiole delimited by short irregular mycelial projections. Setae acicular to subulate, straight or curved, flexuous, 3–8-septate. Conidiomatal walls brown to dark brown, textura angularis cells irregular. Subiculum brown to light brown, as a loose, trichome-associated aggregate of interwoven branched, septate hyphae connecting the base of the conidiomata to the trichomes. Conidiogenous cells holoblastic, subglobose, ampulliform, subhyaline to pale brown, smooth, forming a fertile layer internally at the base of the conidiomata. Conidia light brown to brown, typically cylindrical-fusiform with a navicular perimeter, distoseptate, showing 7–12 transverse septa and 1–2 longitudinal or oblique septa, smooth walled, slightly constricted at some septa at maturity, apically appendiculate with a sharply obconical truncate base (adapted from Santos et al. 2021).
Type species: Megacoelomyces sancheziae Dianese, Guterres, M.D.M. Santos & G.F. Sepúlveda
Notes: Megacoelomyces is characterised by epiphytic colonies, pycnidial, obclavate, rostrate neck, ostiolate conidiomata, brown to light brown subiculum, holoblastic, subglobose, ampulliform, subhyaline to pale brown conidiogenous cells and light brown to brown conidia with 7–12 transverse septa and 1–2 longitudinal or oblique septa. Megacoelomyces is unique in having large, superficial, barely setose pycnidial conidiomata situated on loose, trichome-associated subiculum. Megacoelomyces is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Phaeosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Megacoelomyces are ITS, LSU, SSU and RPB2.
