Importance and distribution

Aphanostigme comprises 21 morphological species. Twenty-three Aphanostigme epithets are listed in Index Fungorum (2022), but two species have been transferred to Nematostoma. The species are known from fifteen host plants: Annona senegalensis, Boswellia serrata, Erythrina tomentosa, Eugenia jambolana, Eupatorium, Flabellaria paniculata, Garrya elliptica, Glycosmis pentaphylla, Heterotrichum macrodon, Jasminum dichotomum, Lantana camara, Maytenus rigida, Phragmites mauritanica, Teramnus labialis, Vaccinium uliginosum, belonging to fourteen plant families Annonaceae, Araliaceae, Asteraceae, Burseraceae, Celastraceae, Ericaceae, Fabaceae, Garryaceae, Leguminosae, Malpighiaceae, Melastomataceae, Myrtaceae, Oleaceae, Poaceae, Rhamnaceae, Rosaceae, Rutaceae, Solanaceae and Verbenaceae. Aphanostigme is reported from Africa (Uganda), Asia (India (Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh)), Australia (New South Wales), Europe (Austria), South America (Brazil, Venezuela) and the United States (California).
