Allophaeosphaeria
Allophaeosphaeria Ariyaw., Camporesi & K.D. Hyde, in Liu et al., Fungal Diversity 72: 137 (2015).
Index Fungorum number: IF 550997; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00494, 6 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 6 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on dead wood. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, globose to subglobose, ostiolate. Ostiole papillate, without periphyses Peridium comprising 2-layers, outer layer composed of heavily pigmented thick-walled, innermost layer of broad, hyaline compressed rows of cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium lacking pseudoparaphyses. Asci bitunicate, fissitunicate, elongate cylindrical to slightly clavate with an ocular chamber. Ascospores oblong to narrowly oblong, multi-septate, muriform, constricted at each septum, hyaline, pale brown when mature, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Liu et al. 2015).
Type species: Allophaeosphaeria muriformis Ariyaw., Camporesi & K.D. Hyde
Notes: Allophaeosphaeria is characterised by superficial, globose to subglobose ascomata, bitunicate, fissitunicate, elongate-cylindrical to slightly clavate asci and oblong to narrowly oblong, multi-septate, muriform ascospores. Allophaeosphaeria is similar to Phaeosphaeria in having a peridium comprising 2–3 layers of brown to dark brown cells of textura angularis and multiseptate ascospores with a gelatinous sheath, but can be differentiated based on the elongate-cylindrical to slightly clavate asci with a clear ocular chamber and absence of pseudoparaphyses. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of Liu et al. (2015), Allophaeosphaeria belongs to Phaeosphaeriaceae. Liu et al. (2015) accommodated two species A. dactylidis and A. muriformis in this genus. Three other species A. clematidis, A. cytisi and A. subcylindrospora were subsequently added in the genus based on phylogenetic evidence and the asexual morph for A. subcylindrospora was reported as coelomycetous, septoriella-like. A. dactylidis was reassigned to Dactylidina by Wanasinghe et al. (2018c). Marin-Felix et al. (2019) synonymized Allosphaeosphaeria under Septoriella based on phylogenetic analysis of ITS, LSU and rpb-2 sequence data. They also transferred A. dactylidis to Septoriella as S. neodactylidis based on phylogeny but these two genera differ in the sexual morph characters but have overlapping asexual morphological features. The status of these genera is still doubtful and Hongsanan et al. (2020a) reinstated Allosphaeosphaeria. Allosphaeosphaeria is currently treated as a distinct genus in Phaeosphaeriaceae but future studies are needed. Molecular markers available for Allosphaeosphaeria are ITS, LSU, SSU and RPB2
