Phaeoseptum

Phaeoseptum Ying Zhang, J. Fourn. & K.D. Hyde, in Zhang et al., Mycologia 105(3): 606 (2013).

Index Fungorum number: IF 561889; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08326, 6 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 6 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata immersed under pseudoclypeus, scattered to gregarious, depressed globose, papillate, ostiolate. Pseudoparaphyses narrowly cellular. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical-clavate, pedicellate, with a small ocular chamber and apical ring best seen in immature asci. Ascospores fusiform, slightly curved, dictyosporous with thickened septa. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zhang et al. 2013).

Type species: Phaeoseptum aquaticum Ying Zhang, J. Fourn. & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Phaeoseptum is characterised by immersed ascomata, cylindrical-clavate, pedicellate asci and fusiform, slightly curved, dictyosporous ascospores. Phaeoseptum resembles Mauritiana in having medium-sized immersed ascomata produced under a pseudoclypeus, narrowly cellular pseudoparaphyses, 8-spored cylindrical to broadly clavate asci and pale brown ascospores with thickened septa. However, Phaeoseptum has dictyosporous ascospores while Mauritiana is characterised by phragmosporous ascospores. Phaeoseptum occurs in freshwater habitat, while Mauritiana is a marine genus found commonly in the intertidal region of mangroves. Phaeoseptum is morphologically and phylogenetically a well-defined genus in Phaeoseptaceae. Molecular markers available for Phaeoseptum are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
