Neoaquastroma

Neoaquastroma Wanas., E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde, in Wanasinghe et al., Phytotaxa 302(2): 139 (2017).

Index Fungorum number: IF 552499; Facesoffungi number: FoF 02609, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 4 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead herbaceous stems. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered, immersed, globose to subglobose or irregular in shape, glabrous, brown to dark brown, ostiolate. Ostiole short papillate, black, smooth, filled with hyaline cells. Peridium comprising cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising numerous, filamentous, branched, septate, pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, clavate, with a short pedicel, apically rounded with an ocular chamber. Ascospores overlapping 2-seriateto triseriate, ellipsoidal to subfusiform, hyaline, multi-septate, with the primary septum almost median, with small to large guttules in each cell, ends remaining cone-shaped, with pointed ends, surrounded by a distinct mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Wanasinghe et al. 2017).

Type species: Neoaquastroma guttulatum Wanas., E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Neoaquastroma resembles Multilocularia in having hyaline ascospores but differs in its immersed, uniloculate ascomata and clavate, short pedicellate asci, while Multilocularia has a multiloculate ascostromata with cylindrical and long pedicellate asci. Molecular markers available for Neoaquastroma include ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1.
