Pleosporales

Parabambusicolaceae

Aquastroma Kaz. Tanaka & K. Hiray., in Tanaka et al., Stud. Mycol. 82: 115 (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 811325; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08321, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on twigs. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered to grouped, immersed to erumpent, globose in surface view, depressed globose in section. Ostiolar neck central, compressed, composed of thick-walled, heavily melanized, subglobose cells, with a wide ostiole. Ascomatal wall composed of pale brown, thin-walled cells. Pseudoparaphyses septate, branched and anastomosed. Asci fissitunicate, clavate, stipitate, with 8 ascospores. Ascospores clavate to fusiform, slightly curved, with a supramedian primary septum, multiseptate, slightly constricted at septa, hyaline, smooth, with an entire sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Tanaka et al. 2015).

Type species: Aquastroma magniostiolatum Kaz. Tanaka & K. Hiray.

Notes: Aquastroma is characterised by scattered to grouped, immersed to erumpent ascomata, central, compressed ostiolar neck, clavate, stipitate, 8-spored asci, and clavate to fusiform, slightly curved, multiseptate ascospores with a supramedian primary septum. Aquastroma resembles Quintaria in having multiseptate ascospores and aquatic habitat but the latter occurs in marine environments, has long-necked ascomata with black incrustations adjacent the sides of the ostiolar canal and is a polyphyletic genus closely related to genera in Amniculicolaceae, Testudinaceae and Platystomaceae (Shearer et al. 2009, Suetrong et al. 2009, Zhang et al. 2012). No asexual morph has been reported for Aquastroma. Aquastroma is a distinct genus in Parabambusicolaceae. Molecular markers available for Aquastroma include ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1.
