Mamillisphaeria K.D. Hyde et al., Nova Hedwigia 62(3-4): 514 (1996).
Index Fungorum number: IF 27612; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00772, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Saprobic in freshwater habitat. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, scattered or gregarious, conical, carbonaceous, papillate. Hamathecium of dense, filiform, trabeculate pseudoparaphyses. Asci broadly clavate to clavate, with small ocular chambers and short pedicels. Ascospores of two types, (1−)2−4-seriate, ellipsoid, hyaline, slightly constricted at the main septum; with apical appendages at each end and around the ascospore; (2) 1−2-seriate, ellipsoid to fusoid, brown, with mucilaginous sheath around the ascospores. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hyde et al. 1996)
Type species: Mamillisphaeria dimorphospora K.D. Hyde, S.W. Wong & E.B.G. Jones
Notes: Mamillisphaeria is characterised by superficial, scattered or gregarious, conical ascomata, broadly clavate to clavate asci and two types of ascospores; one is 2−4-seriate, ellipsoid, hyaline, slightly constricted at the main septum; with apical appendages at each end and around the ascospores and the other is 2-seriate, ellipsoid to fusoid, brown, with mucilaginous sheath around the ascospores. The asexual morph is not reported. Mamillisphaeria is unique in having dimorphic ascospores. Molecular data is not available for Mamillisphaeria. Mamillisphaeria is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Melanommataceae.
