Saprobic on woody litter or herbs. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous. Colonies effuse, superficial, brown. Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, erect, flexuous, septate, unbranched, brown to dark brown, single, smooth, thick-walled, cylindrical, percurrently proliferating. Conidiogenous cells enteroblastic, integrated, terminal, often light brown and subhyaline at apex, cylindrical or doliiform. Conidia acrogenous, solitary, dry, rostrate, straight or curved, fusiform to ellipsoidal, euseptate, pale brown to brown, smooth or verruculose, thick walled. Conidial secession rhexolytic (adapted from Li et al. 2017).

Notes: Fusiconidium is characterised by macronematous, mononematous, erect, flexuous conidiophores, enteroblastic, integrated, terminal conidiogenous cells, acrogenous, solitary, dry, rostrate, straight or curved, fusiform to ellipsoidal conidia with rhexolytic conidial secession. Fusiconidium is morphologically similar to Sporidesmiella, Nigrolentilocus, Phragmocephala and Distophragmia in having similar conidial shape but is phylogenetically distinct. Fusiconidium differs from Sporidesmiella and Distophragmia in having distoseptate conidia with schizolytic conidial secession (Tian et al. 2015). Fusiconidium can be differentiated from Phragmocephala in having synnematous conidiophores and holoblastic conidiogenous cells lacking percurrent extensions (Mason & Hughes 1951, Whitton et al. 2012, Su et al. 2015, Li et al. 2017). Fusiconidium is also different from Nigrolentilocus in that the former has polyblastic or holoblastic conidiogenous cells with schizolytic conidial secession while the latter has rhexolytic conidial secession, percurrently proliferating conidiophores, with enteroblastic conidiogenous cells and acrogenous, pale brown to dark brown, verruculose, fusiform, euseptate conidia. Fusiconidium is a distinct and well-defined genus in Melanommataceae. Molecular markers available for Fusiconidium are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
