Importance and distribution

There are 38 Byssosphaeria epithets in Index Fungorum (2022), but several species have been transferred to other genera such as Acanthonitschkea, Chaetosphaeria, Dematophora, Endoxylina, Eriosphaeria, Exosporiella, Herpotrichia, Hypoxylon, Nitschkia, Pseudotrichia, Rosellinia, Scortechinia, Thaxteriella and Trichosphaeria. Byssosphaeria comprises 16 species known on a wide range of plants such as Acer pseudoplatanus (Sapindaceae), Archontophoenix alexandrae (Arecaceae), Chromolaena odorata (Asteraceae), Cocos nucifera (Arecaceae), Deutzia sp. (Hydrangeaceae), Jussiaea longifolia (Onagraceae), Populus sp. (Salicaceae), Rhapis excelsa (Arecaceae), Robinia pseudoacacia (Fabaceae) and Trachycarpus fortunei (Arecaceae). Byssosphaeria is distributed in Asia (China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand), Australia, Europe (Poland), South America (Argentina, Brazil) and The United States (Alaska, Louisiana, New Jersey).
