Alpinaria

Alpinaria Jaklitsch & Voglmayr, Sydowia 69: 84 (2017).

Index Fungorum number: IF 819135; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08295, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata erumpent from bark, solitary or in groups, more or less globose, black; apex with a central ostiolar perforation or with a papilla. Peridium pseudoparenchymatous, brown. Hamathecium of septate paraphyses. Asci cylindrical, bitunicate, fissitunicate, 8-spored. Ascospores uniseriate, ellipsoid to fusoid, brown, with transverse eusepta. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Jaklitsch & Voglmayr 2017).

Type species: Alpinaria rhododendri (Niessl) Jaklitsch & Voglmayr

Notes: Cucurbitaria rhododendri was previously transferred to Melanomma as Melanomma rhododendri (Rehm 1881, Holm 1968). Jaklitsch and Voglmayr (2017) epitypified C. rhododendri, proposed the combination A. rhododendri and the new genus Alpinaria was introduced based on the alpine habitat. Alpinaria is characterised by erumpent globose ascomata, cylindrical asci, and ellipsoid to fusoid ascospores. Phylogenetically, Alpinaria is a distinct and well-supported genus in Melanommataceae. Molecular markers available for Alpinaria are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
