Massarioramusculicola

Massarioramusculicola Huanral., Thambug. & K. D. Hyde, Phytotaxa 371(1): 20 (2018).

Index Fungorum number: IF 554425; Facesoffungi number: FoF 04478, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on a dead twig. Sexual morph: Ascomata immersed to semi-immersed, solitary or scattered, globose to subglobose, black, ostiolate. Peridium composed of two strata; outer stratum comprising several layers of dark brown to black, thick-walled cells of textura angularis, inner stratum comprising several layers of lightly pigmented to hyaline, thin-walled cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising cylindrical to filiform, trabeculae, rarely branched and septate, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical, pedicellate. Ascospores hyaline, fusiform, 3-septate, surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Huanraluek et al. 2018).

Type species: Massarioramusculicola chiangraiensis Huanral., Thambug. & Hyde

Notes: Massarioramusculicola is characterised by immersed to semi-immersed ascomata, fissitunicate, cylindrical asci and hyaline, fusiform, 3-septate ascospores surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath. Massarioramusculicola resembles Neomassaria but can be differentiated in that the latter has larger ascomata usually firmly embedded in pseudostromatic tissues merged with substrate cells enclosed in a black marginal region and shielded by a dark clypeus. Neomassaria is characterised by a peridium with a single stratum and consists of light brown cells of textura angularis, hamathecium of occasionally branched and septate pseudoparaphyses, ascosporesuniseptate while Massarioramusculicola has a peridium with two strata and consists of dark brown to hyaline cells of textura angularis, branched, septate trabeculae pseudoparaphyses and 3-septate ascospores. Massarioramusculicola and Neomassaria can be clearly separated based on DNA sequence data. Massarioramusculicola is a distinct genus in Massariaceae with high statistical support. Molecular markers available for Massarioramusculicola are ITS, LSU and SSU.
