Quintaria
Quintaria Kohlm. & Volkm. -Kohlm., Botanica Marina 34: 34 (1991).
Index Fungorum number: IF 25522; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08282, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata laterally compressed, subglobose to globose in frontal view, fusiform in sagittal section, completely immersed beneath a cyclindrical clypeus with a longitudinal furrow at the top, ostiolate, coriaceous, clustered and light-colored. Peridium comprising vertically orientated elongate cells (textura angularis) and fusing at the sides with the clypeus and with the host cells at the outside. Clypeus dome-shaped in frontal view, composed of small angular cells which are filled with numerous brown melanon particles. Ostiole depressed in the centre of the apical furrow. Hamathecium trabeculae, branching and anastomosing above the asci, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, clavate, bitunicate, fissitunicate, pedicellate with an ocular chamber and apical thickening which appears ring-like, arising from the base of the ascomata. Ascospores 2−3 seriate, ellipsoidal, (10−)11−13(−14)-septate, fifth or sixth cell from top largest, constricted below this cell, hyaline with a verrucose covering and thin sheath with a wavy outline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from description of Quintaria aquatica in Hyde and Goh 1999).
Type species: Quintaria lignatilis (Kohlm.) Kohlm. & Volkm. -Kohlm.
Notes: Quintaria is characterised by subglobose to globose ascomata, clavate, bitunicate, fissitunicate, pedicellate asci and 2−3 seriate, ellipsoidal, (10−)11−13(−14)-septate ascospores. We could find the original description by Kohlmeyer and Volkmann-Kohlmeyer (1991) so we gave the generic description of Quintaria based on Quintaria aquatica in Hyde and Goh (1999). Kohlmeyer (1984) previously described Quintaria lignatilis as a Trematosphaeria species. Kohlmeyer and Volkmann-Kohlmeyer (1991) revised the work of Kohlmeyer (1984) and assigned Quintaria lignatilis to the new genus Quintaria. Hyde and Goh (1999) added Q. aquatica and Zhang et al. (2008) added Q. microspora. Quintaria is a polyphyletic genus (Zhang et al. 2008). In the phylogenetic analysis of Suetrong et al. (2009), Q. lignatilis formed a distinct lineage sister to Testudinaceae with low statistical support. In the multigene analysis of Hyde et al. (2013), Q. submersa clustered in Lindgomycetaceae but the authors did not include Q. lignatilis in their analysis. Thambugala et al. (2015) did not accept Quintaria in Lophiostomataceae. Jones et al. (2019) referred Q. lignatilis to Ascomycota incertae sedis. We follow Jones et al. (2019) and transfer Quintaria to Dothideomycetes, genera incertae sedis until fresh collections and sequence data becomes available to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus. Molecular markers available for Quintaria are LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
