Pseudoplatystomum

Pseudoplatystomum Thambug. & K.D. Hyde, in Thambugala et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-015-0348-3, [39] (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 551253; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00822; 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on marine driftwood. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary or gregarious, immersed to slightly erumpent, subglobose, black, coriaceous, ostiolate. Ostiole slit-like, central, rounded, broadly papillate, ostiolar canal cylindrical, filled with a network of branched, septate periphyses. Peridium composed of two strata, outer layer wide at the base and the sides, wider near the ostiole, composed of melanized cells forming textura angularis, fusing with the host tissue, and the inner stratum thick at the base, composed of hyaline, rounded or weakly angular small cells that merge with the pseudoparaphyses. Hamathecium comprising 1.2–2 μm wide, trabeculae pseudoparaphyses, unbranched at the base, becoming branched and anastomosing above the asci, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical, pedicellate, apically rounded, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores uniseriate, brown, fusiform, muriform, with 5–7(−8) transverse septa and 1–2(−3) vertical septa, constricted at the central septum, rough-walled or verrucose, lacking a mucilaginous sheath (Abdel-Wahab & Jones 2000). Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Thambugala et al. 2015).

Type species: Pseudoplatystomum scabridisporum (Abdel-Wahab & E.B.G. Jones) Thambug. & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Pseudoplatystomum is characterised by immersed to slightly erumpent, subglobose ascomata, slit-like, central ostiole, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical asci and fusiform, muriform, ascospores with 5–7(−8) transverse septa and 1–2(−3) vertical septa. Pseudoplatystomum scabridisporum, previously known as Platystomum scabridisporum was introduced by Abdel-Wahab and Jones (2000) and placed in Platystomaceae based on morphology. Suetrong et al. (2009) confirmed that P. scabridisporum clusters in Lophiostomataceae based on multigene phylogenetic analysis of SSU, LSU, TEF1, and RPB2 sequence data but did not formerly transfer P. scabridisporum to the family. This taxonomic placement was also confirmed by Thambugala et al. (2015). Pseudoplatystomum differs from Platystomum in having smaller ascomata, broadly papillate ostiole filled with periphyses, wider peridium with cells of textura angularis, longer asci and verrucose walled ascospores with more septa (Abdel-Wahab & Jones 2000, Thambugala et al. 2015). Pseudoplatystomum is a clearly defined genus in Lophiostomataceae. Molecular markers available for Pseudoplatystomum are LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
