Neovaginatispora

Neovaginatispora A. Hashim., K. Hiray. & Kaz. Tanaka, in Hashimoto et al., Stud. Mycol. 90: 167 (2018).

Index Fungorum number: IF 823147; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08279, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on decaying stem. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered, immersed, papilla erumpent through host surface, coriaceous to carbonaceous, dark brown to black, globose to subglobose, ostiolate. Ostiole crest-like, central, periphysate, broadly papillate, with an irregular pore-like opening, plugged by hyaline, filamentous hyphae, and occasionally lighter colored. Peridium composing two layers of irregular cells arranged in a textura angularis, cells towards the inside hyaline, at the outside, darker, light brown, somewhat flattened, fusing and indistinguishable from the host tissues. Hamathecium massive, long cylindrical cellular, anastomosed, hyaline, septate, pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical to cylindric-clavate, short pedicel with furcate to obtuse ends, apically rounded with an indistinct ocular chamber. Ascospores subfusoid, 2-seriateoverlapping in the ascus, uniseptate at the centre, strongly constricted at the median septum, straight or slightly curved, enlarged near the septum at the upper cell, hyaline, guttulate, surrounded by thin mucilaginous sheath when immature, invisible at maturity, club-shaped appendages at both ends, smooth walled with guttules. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hashimoto et al. 2018).

Type species: Neovaginatispora fuckelii (Sacc.) A. Hashim., K. Hiray. & Kaz. Tanaka

Notes: Neovaginatispora morphologically resembles Vaginatispora but differs in having a thinner peridium of uniform thickness. Phukhamsakda et al. (2020) added the second species N. clematidis. Neovaginatispora fuckelii was initially described as Vaginatispora fuckelii and later transferred to Neovaginatispora based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses (Hashimoto et al. 2018). Tennakoon et al. (2018) reported N. fuckelii as a new record from dead stems of Mangifera indica in Taiwan. Neovaginatispora is a distinct and well-defined genus in Lophiostomataceae. Molecular markers available for Neovaginatispora includes LSU, ITS and TEF-1.
