Magnopulchromyces
Magnopulchromyces L.B. Conc., Gusmão & R.F. Castañeda, in Yuan et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-020-00461-7, [23] (2020).
Index Fungorum number: IF 556378; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06109, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on decaying leaves of unidentified plant. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, scorpioid growth, septate, brown. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic intercalary, pale brown or greyish brown. Conidial secession schizolytic. Conidia acropleurogenous, complex, lenticular-staurospore, somewhat stellate or irregular staurospore, variegated, multicellular, composed of a primary cell, one or several, secondary cells, several tertiary cells and several satellite cells hemispherical, straight or slightly curved, greyish brown or very pale brown (adapted from Yuan et al. 2020).
Type species: Magnopulchromyces scorpiophorus L.B. Conc., Gusmão & R.F. Castañeda
Notes: Magnopulchromyces is characterised by macronematous, mononematous conidiophores, schizolytic conidial secession and acropleurogenous, complex, lenticular-staurospore conidia. Magnopulchromyces resembles Turturconchata in having multicellular, lenticular, complex conidia, with holoblastic production and schizolytic secession (Castañeda-Ruiz & Iturriaga 1999, Chen et al. 1999). Magnopulchromyces differs from Turturconchata in that the former genus has single or grouped conidiophores, curved to spiral and conidia lacking an eccentric protuberating pedicel. In the multigene phylogenetic analyses of Yuan et al. (2020) based on LSU, ITS and TEF1-α sequence data, Magnopulchromyces formed a distinct lineage in Lophiostomataceae with strong statistical support. Magnopulchromyces is morphologically and phylogenetically a well-defined genus in Lophiostomataceae. Molecular markers available for Magnopulchromyces are ITS, LSU and TEF-1.
