Leptoparies

Leptoparies A. Hashim., K. Hiray., & Kaz. Tanaka, in Hashimoto et al., Stud. Mycol. 90: 171 (2018).

Index Fungorum number: IF 823138; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08278, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered, immersed, subglobose. Ostiolar neck elongated, laterally compressed. Peridium relatively thin, composed rectangular, brown cells. Pseudoparaphyses numerous, septate, branched and anastomosed. Asci bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical-clavate, 8-spored. Ascospores fusiform, hyaline, uniseptate, with a narrow bipolar sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hashimoto et al. 2018).

Type species: Leptoparies palmarum A. Hashim., K. Hiray. & Kaz. Tanaka

Notes: Leptoparies is characterised by scattered, immersed, subglobose ascomata, cylindrical-clavate, 8-spored asci and fusiform, hyaline, uniseptate ascospores. Leptoparies can be differentiated from other genera in Lophiostomataceae in having a thin peridium comprising rectangular cells and lack of surrounding brown hyphae. Leptoparies resembles Capulatispora based on the thin peridium and ascospores with a narrow bipolar sheath but the latter has shorter ascus stipe (Thambugala et al. 2015, Hashimoto et al. 2018). Leptoparies is a distinct and well-defined genus in Lophiostomataceae. Molecular markers available for Leptoparies are ITS, LSU, SSU, BTUB, RPB2 and TEF-1.
