Alpestrisphaeria

Alpestrisphaeria Thambug. & K.D. Hyde, in Thambugala et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-015-0348-3, [16] (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 551232; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00799, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead wood, soil in terrestrial habitats. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered, or clustered in small groups, erumpent, coriaceous to carbonaceous, black, subglobose, covered with sparse, brown, septate hyphae, ostiolate. Ostiole slit-like, central, suborbicular, papillate, periphysate, with a pore-like opening. Hamathecium comprising numerous, hyaline, filiform, septate, pseudoparaphyses between and above the asci, embedded in a hyaline gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, clavate or cylindrical, sometime curved, pedicellate, rounded at the apex with an ocular chamber. Ascospores bi or uni seriate or partially overlapping, filamentous or fusiform, hyaline or becoming brown at maturity, multi septate, verruculose or smooth, lacking a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Thambugala et al. 2015).

Type species: Alpestrisphearia terricola (G.S. Gong) Thambug. & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Alpestrisphaeria was introduced by Thambugala et al. (2015) with A. terricola as type species. Alpestrisphaeria is characterised by scattered black, subglobose ascomata, clavate or cylindrical asci and filamentous or fusiform, hyaline ascospores. Alpestrisphaeria terricola previously known as Trematosphaeria terricola was introduced by Gong (in Zhou et al. 2014). In the phylogenetic analysis of Thambugala et al. (2015), Alpestrisphaeria formed a distinct lineage in Lophiostomataceae and hence was placed in a new genus based on morphology and phylogeny. LSU, SSU and ITS sequence data are available for Alpestrisphaeria in GenBank.
