Neolindgomyces

Neolindgomyces Jayasiri, E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde, in Jayasiri et al., Mycosphere 10(1): 79 (2019).

Index Fungorum number: IF 555555; Facesoffungi number: FoF 05260, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on Pandanus sp. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered to gregarious, immersed, coriaceous, dark brown to black, surrounded by large, carbonaceous parenchymatous cells, clypeus present. Ostiole slit-like, central, with a reduced crest and a pore-like opening, plugged by gelatinous tissue, made up of lightly pigmented, pseudoparenchymatous cells. Peridium circular, symmetric, dark brown to black layers, somewhat flattened cells of textura angularis, fusing and indistinguishable from the host tissues, with inner stratum comprising hyaline cell layers of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising numerous, filamentous, branched septate, pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical, short-pedicellate, apex rounded with a minute ocular chamber. Ascospores uniseriate to bi-seriate, overlapping, hyaline, fusiform with narrow, acute ends, 8-septate, constricted at the septa, smooth-walled, guttulate, with a wide mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Jayasiri et al. 2019).

Type species: Neolindgomyces pandanae Jayasiri, E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Neolindgomyces is characterised by scattered to gregarious, immersed, coriaceous ascomata, slit-like, central ostiole, cylindrical, short-pedicellate asci and uniseriate to bi-seriate, overlapping, hyaline, fusiform with narrow, acute ends, 8-septate ascospores. Neolindgomyces is unique and can be differentiated from similar genera based on the having carbonaceous peridium and presence of clypeus (Zhang et al. 2009, Hirayama et al. 2010, Hyde et al. 2013, Jayasiri et al. 2019). Neolindgomyces is a distinct and well-defined genus in Lindgomycetaceae. The ideal molecular markers to distinguish among species of Neolindgomyces is TEF1. Molecular markers available for Neolindgomyces are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
