Lolia
Lolia Abdel-Aziz & Abdel-Wahab, Mycotaxon 114: 36 (2011) [2010].
Index Fungorum number: IF 518528; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08270, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata acervular, superficial, pearl white, embedded in gel, single or aggregated. Peridium forming textura intricata, hyaline, embedded in gel. Conidiogenesis holoblastic. Conidia unicellular, clavate, cylindrical, ellipsoidal, hyaline, smooth, thin-walled, with basal and apical cellular, tapering, attenuating appendages of type A. (adapted from Abdel-Aziz & Abdel-Wahab 2010).
Type species: Lolia aquatica Abdel-Aziz & Abdel-Wahab
Notes: Lolia is characterised by acervular, superficial, pearl white conidiomata, peridium forming textura intricata and unicellular, clavate, cylindrical conidia. Abdel-Aziz and Abdel-Wahab (2010) reported that Lolia is a member of Lindgomycetaceae, Pleosporales based on phylogenetic analyses of partial 28S rDNA. Lolia resembles Chaetospermum in having pearl white conidiomata, peridium comprising cells of textura intricata, and conidia bearing type A appendages but can be differentiated in that the latter has stromatic, pycnoid conidiomata and an equal number of conidial appendages (3 to 6) at each end (Sutton 1980, Nag Raj 1993, Abdel-Aziz & Abdel-Wahab 2010). Lolia also resembles other coelomycetous genera such as Bartalinia and Discostroma in having septate hyaline or colored conidia with cellular apical and basal appendages but these genera are phylogenetically distinct and belong to Sordariomycetes (Jeewon et al. 2002). Lolia is a distinct and well-defined genus in Lindgomycetaceae. Molecular markers available for Lolia are LSU and SSU.
