Importance and distribution

Alternariaster comprises four species known on four host within Asteraceae, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Bidens sulphurea, Centaurea diffusa and Helianthus sp. Alternariaster is distributed in Africa (Uganda), Asia (Russia), Europe (Hungary), South America (Brazil) and the United States. Alternariaster helianthi is a pathogen of sunflower, a major oil crop. It causes leaf spot and blight disease which reduces seed germination and seedling survival (Udayashankar et al. 2020).
