Phragmocamarosporium

Phragmocamarosporium Wijayaw., Yong Wang bis & K.D. Hyde, Cryptogamie, Mycologie 36 (2): 217 (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 551084; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00465, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 3 species with molecular data.

Saprobic and endophytic on twigs of Araliaceae and Platanaceae (Dicotyledons). Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, subepidermal, black, gregarious, unilocular, globose to subglobose, papillate ostiole, central. Conidiomata wall multi-layered, outer wall composed of dark brown, thin-walled cells of textura angularis, with inner layer of hyaline, thin-walled cells of textura angularis. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells enteroblastic, phialidic, discrete, determinate, simple to branched at the base, short or long, hyaline to pale brown, smooth-walled. Conidia medium brown, clavate or ellipsoid to subcylindrical, with obtuse apex and truncate base, straight to curved, (2−)3(−4)-transverse septate, rarely with 1 longitudinal septum, constricted at the septa (adapted from Wijayawardene et al. 2015).

Type species: Phragmocamarosporium platani Wijayaw., Yong Wang bis & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Phragmocamarosporium is characterised by pycnidial, subepidermal, black conidiomata, conidiomata wall comprising thin-walled cells of textura angularis, enteroblastic, phialidic conidiogenous cells, and medium brown, clavate or ellipsoid to subcylindrical conidia. Phragmocamarosporium morphologically resembles Camarosporium in having brown, phragmosporous conidia but can be differentiated based on DNA sequence data (Ellis & Everhart 1900). Phragmocamarosporium is a strongly supported genus in Lentitheciaceae. Molecular markers available for Phragmocamarosporium are ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1.
