Neoophiosphaerella

Neoophiosphaerella Kaz. Tanaka & K. Hiray., in Tanaka et al., Stud. Mycol. 82: 100 (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 811310; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08260, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered to grouped, erumpent, subglobose to hemispherical with flattened base. Ostiolar neck central, terete, flush, covered by black clypeus. Ascomatal wall at sides composed of several layers of thin-walled brown cells. Pseudoparaphyses numerous, cellular, branched. Asci fissitunicate, cylindrical, short-stalked, with 8 parallel or twisted ascospores. Ascospores filiform, multiseptate, hyaline to pale yellowish brown, smooth, surrounded by a sheath. Asexual morph: unknown (adapted from Tanaka et al. 2015).

Type species: Neoophiosphaerella sasicola (Nagas. & Y. Otani) Kaz. Tanaka & K. Hiray.

Notes: Neoophiosphaerella is characterised by erumpent, subglobose ascomata, central, terete ostiolar neck, cylindrical, short-stalked asci and filiform, multiseptate, hyaline to pale yellowish brown ascospores. Neoophiosphaerella resembles Ophiosphaerella but can be differentiated in that the latter has globose to subglobose ascomata with a papillate ostiolar neck while the former genus is characterised by hemispherical ascomata without papilla but covered by clypei (Phookamsak et al. 2014, Tanaka et al. 2015). Neoophiosphaerella is a distinct and well-defined genus in Lentitheciaceae. Molecular markers available for Neoophiosphaerella are ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1.
