Pseudoasteromassaria

Pseudoasteromassaria M. Matsum. & Kaz. Tanaka, in Ariyawansa et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-015-0346-5, [53] (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 551448; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00963, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Parasitic on twigs. Sexual morph: Ascomata mostly scattered, immersed, compressed globose, with central, papillate ostiole. Peridium composed of two layers. Hamathecium comprising numerous, hyaline, septate, branched, cellular pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindric to clavate, pedicellate, apically rounded, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores 2–3 overlapping seriate, brown, fusiform, 1–3-septate. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, scattered, immersed or superficial, globose, ostiolate. Peridium composed of 2 strata; outer stratum composed of 3–5 layers of polygonal, brown to pale brown cells; inner stratum composed of 2–3 layers of polygonal, hyaline cells. Conidiophores absent. Conidiogenous cells enteroblastic, phialidic, doliform to ampulliform. Conidia cylindric, truncate at the base, 6–7-septate, hyaline (adapted from Ariyawansa et al. 2015).

Type species: Pseudoasteromassaria fagi M. Matsum. & Kaz. Tanaka

Notes: Pseudoasteromassaria is characterised by scattered, immersed, compressed globose ascomata, cylindric to clavate asci and brown, fusiform, 1–3-septate ascospores. Pseudoasteromassaria resembles Asteromassaria (Pleomassariaceae) in having large ascomata and occurrence on Fagus (Fagaceae) (Sivanesan 1984) but differs in that the asexual morph of the Asteromassaria referred to as Scolicosporium is characterised by acervular conidiomata and fusiform, pigmented conidia while Pseudoasteromassaria has globose, ostiolate conidiomata and cylindric, truncate at the base, 6–7-septate hyaline conidia (Fischer 1944, Spooner & Kirk 1982, Ariyawansa et al. 2015). The common molecular markers currently used to distinguish species of Pseudoasteromassaria are SSU and LSU gene region. Pseudoasteromassaria is morphologically and phylogenetically a clearly defined genus in Latoruaceae. Molecular markers available for Pseudoasteromassaria are ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1.
