Hypsostroma

Hypsostroma Huhndorf, Mycologia 84(5): 750 (1992).

Index Fungorum number: IF 25538; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08254, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on rock. Sexual morph: Ascomata clustered, superficial, obpyriform, papillate to beaked, ostiolate; surface roughened or hairy; subiculum abundant, tomentose. Wall soft-textured, three-layered, pseudoparenchymatic. Pseudoparaphyses abundant, trabeculate. Asci numerous, basal, fasciculate, elongate clavate, very long-stalked. Ascospores multiseptate, disarticulating. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Huhndorf 1992).

Type species: Hypsostroma saxicola Huhndorf

Notes: Hypsostroma is characterised by superficial, obpyriform, papillate ascomata, fasciculate, elongate, clavate asci and multiseptate, disarticulating ascospores. Hypsostroma resembles Bombardia in having large, superficial ascomata on a subiculum but both genera are phylogenetically distinct as Bombardia belongs to Lasiosphaeriaceae, Sordariomycetes. Hypsostroma is also similar to members of the Fenestellaceae in having three layered, pseudoparenchymatous ascomatal wall. Hypsostroma also resembles Ostropella in having clavate and long-stipitate asci but differs in that in Hypsostroma the base of the asci has a central columnar structure while in Ostropella the asci peripherally line the entire centrum. Hypsostroma is also morphologically comparable to Preussia in having ascospores which separate into part-spores and possess germ slits but Preussia lacks a characteristic gel coating and has deep septal constrictions which are absent in Hypsostroma. Huhndorf (1992) postulated that the placement of Hypsostroma lies in the Melanommatales, but did not assign the genus to any family. Later, Huhndorf (1994) placed Hypsostroma in the new family Hypsostromataceae. Mugambi and Huhndorf (2009) verified the status of Hypsostromataceae and confirmed that the family was a strongly supported monophyletic group nested within the Pleosporales. Hypsostroma is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Hypsostromataceae. Only LSU and SSU molecular data are available for Hypsostroma in GenBank.
