Halotthia

Halotthia Kohlm., Nova Hedwigia 6: 9 (1963).

Index Fungorum number: IF 2212; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08248, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic or parasitic on the sea grass Posidonia oceanica in temperate climates. Stromata black, subepidermal. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary or gregarious, conical or semi globose, immersed becoming erumpent, ostiolate, epapillate, carbonaceous. Peridium many layered, outer layer of small, irregular, thick-walled cells, inner layer with larger lumina, black. Hamathecium of narrowly cellular, septate, simple pseudoparaphyses, numerous, persistent. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, pedicel, bitunicate, fissitunicate, persistent, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores uni-seriate, ellipsoidal, uniseptate, brown, septa with a dark band around the septum, constricted at the septum, walls thickened at both ends, appearing hyaline. Asexual morph: Pycnidial. Conidiophores simple obclavate. Conidia (or spermatia) subglobose, ovoid or ellipsoidal, hyaline (adapted from Hyde et al. 2013).

Type species: Halotthia posidoniae (Durieu & Mont.) Kohlm.

Notes: Halotthia was introduced by Kohlmeyer (1963) with H. posidoniae as type species. Halotthia is characterised by solitary or gregarious ascomata, 8-spored, cylindrical asci, ellipsoidal, uniseptate, brown ascospores. Kohlmeyer and Kohlmeyer (1979) transferred Halotthia to Pleosporaceae based on morphology. Malloch and Cain (1972) placed Halotthia in Zopfiaceae while Jones et al. (2009) transferred the genus to Pleosporales incertae sedis. Suetrong et al. (2009) confirmed the placement of Halotthia in Pleosporales based on multigene analysis of LSU, RPB2, SSU and TEF-1 but did not assign it to any order and family. Zhang et al. (2013) introduced Halotthiaceae to accommodate Halotthia as the type genus. Halotthia is a distinct and well-defined genus in Halotthiaceae. Molecular markers available for Halotthia are LSU and SSU.
