Fuscostagonospora

Fuscostagonospora Kaz. Tanaka & K. Hiray., in Tanaka et al., Stud. Mycol. 82: 124 (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 811330; Facesoffungi number: FoF 2898, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 4 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered, immersed, globose to subglobose. Ostiolar neck clypeate, central, short papillate, with periphyses. Ascomatal wall composed of pale brown, compressed cells. Pseudoparaphyses appearing trabecular, branched and anastomosed, associated with gelatinous material. Asci fissitunicate, cylindrical, with a long stipe. Ascospores narrowly fusiform, 1(–3)-septate, hyaline, with an entire sheath. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, scattered, immersed, depressed globose, ostiolate. Conidiomatal wall composed of thin-walled cells. Conidiophores absent. Conidiogenous cells doliiform, annellidic. Conidia yellow to pale brown and 3-septate (adapted from Tanaka et al. 2015).

Type species: Fuscostagonospora sasae Kaz. Tanaka & K. Hiray.

Notes: Fuscostagonospora was introduced by Tanaka and Hirayama in Tanaka et al. (2015) with F. sasae as type species. Fuscostagonospora is characterised by scattered, immersed, globose to subglobose ascomata, trabecular pseudoparaphyses, cylindrical asci and narrowly fusiform, 1(–3)-septate, hyaline ascospores with an entire sheath. The asexual morph is characterised by scattered, immersed, depressed globose conidiomata, doliiform, annellidic conidiogenous cells, yellow to pale brown and 3-septate conidia. Fuscostagonospora resembles Stilbospora in having pigmented phragmosporous conidia but differs in that the latter is characterised by acervular conidiomata filled with paraphyses while the former has globose conidiomata (Voglmayr & Jaklitsch 2014). Fuscostagonospora also differs from Stilbospora in that the latter is phylogenetically distinct and groups in the Diaporthales within the Sordariomycetes (Crous et al. 2012). Fuscostagonospora also resembles Sclerostagonospora in having similar conidial morphology but differs in that the latter has a phaeosphaeria-like sexual morph (Quaedvlieg et al. 2013). Fuscostagonospora is similar to Bambusicola in having narrowly fusiform ascospores and pigmented septate conidia but differs in that the former has ascomata with a prominent clypeus and is phylogenetically distinct (Dai et al. 2012). Fuscostagonospora is a distinct lineage within Pleosporales and accommodated in its own family Fuscostagonosporaceae with good statistical support (Tanaka et al. 2015). Molecular markers available for Fuscostagonospora are ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1.
