Pseudodidymocyrtis
Pseudodidymocyrtis Flakus, Rodr. Flakus & Etayo, in Flakus et al., Plant and Fungal Systematics 64(2): 310 (2019).
Index Fungorum number: IF 833337; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11542, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Lichenicolous. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecioid, subspherical to pyriform, dispersed, fully immersed in the host thallus and apothecial margins or breaking the cortex of the host thallus when older, visible as black dots, not causing gall formation. Peridium dark brown, covered by an indistinct clypeus, in the upper part usually developing a short beak, laterally, consisting of 4–6 layers of cells, cell, inner part of thin-walled, hyaline to pale brown cells, outer layer of thin- to thick-walled, dark brown cells. Pseudoparaphyses branched and anastomosing. Asci bitunicate, narrowly cylindrical, with a short pedicel, I–, K/I–, endoascus KI+ orange, with strongly thickened apical apparatus and an evident apical cushion (when seen in K/I), 8-spored. Ascospores uniseriate to half-overlapping, golden-brown to brown, K+ dark olivaceous-brown, 3-septate, strongly verruculose, strongly constricted, especially near median septum, the second cell from above wider, with a 1–3 μm thick gelatin coat when young. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Flakus et al. 2019).
Type species: Pseudodidymocyrtis lobariellae Flakus, Rodr. Flakus & Etayo
Notes: Pseudodidymocyrtis is characterised by perithecioid, subspherical to pyriform ascomata, bitunicate, narrowly cylindrical asci and golden-brown to brown, K+ dark olivaceous-brown, 3-septate ascospores. Pseudodidymocyrtis resembles Didymocyrtis but differs in that the latter has asci with strongly thickened apical apparatus and poorly developed arrangement when seen in KI, uniform and thinner pseudoparaphyses, different pigments in peridium and ascospores not constricted at septa and Phoma-like asexual morph (Ertz et al. 2015, Flakus et al. 2019). Pseudodidymocyrtis is closely related to Kalmusia by its lichenicolous habit, asci with short pedicel and very strongly thickened apical apparatus, an obvious apical cushion, paler, golden-brown to brown ascospores. Pseudodidymocyrtis is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and well-defined genus in Didymosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Pseudodidymocyrtis include LSU, SSU and ITS.
