Paramassariosphaeria Wanas., E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde, in Wanasinghe et al., Fungal Biology 120(11): 1367 (2016).

Index Fungorum number: IF 552194; Facesoffungi number: FoF 02293, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead, herbaceous stems. Sexual morph: Ascomata, immersed to semi-erumpent, solitary, globose to subglobose, dark brown to black, ostiolate. Ostioles with, black, smooth, papillate, ostiolar canal, filled with hyaline to dark brown cells. Peridium composed of 3 –5 layers, brown to dark brown or blackish brown, pseudoparenchymatous cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising numerous, filamentous, branched, septate, pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindric-clavate to clavate, pedicellate, thick-walled at the apex, with a minute ocular chamber. Ascospores uniseriate to overlapping 1–2-seriate, hyaline when young, becoming brown at maturity, curved-fusoid, asymmetrical, with multiple transverse septa, slightly constricted at the septa, widest above the central septum, conical and narrowly rounded at the ends, initially guttulate, with rough surface, surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Wanasinghe et al. 2016).

Type species: Paramassariosphaeria clematidicola Wanas., Camporesi, E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Paramassariosphaeria is similar to Kalmusia and Neokalmusia in peridium, asci and ascospores characters however, phylogenetically, Paramassariosphaeria is a distinct genus in Didymosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Paramassariosphaeria are LSU, SSU, ITS and TEF-1.
