Austropleospora

Austropleospora R.G. Shivas & L. Morin, in Morin et al., Fungal Diversity 40(1): 70 (2010).

Index Fungorum number: IF 512742; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00539, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 3 species with molecular data.

Pathogenic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecioid, scattered and immersed in host leaves and stems, black, ostiolate, with a protruding neck. Pseudoparaphyses numerous, filiform, septate, branched, hyaline. Asci bitunicate, 6-8-spored, clavate to cylindrical. Ascospores dictyosporous, ellipsoidal, yellowish brown, smooth. Asexual morph: Camarosporium Schulzer sensu lato (adapted from Morin et al. 2010).

Type species: Austropleospora osteospermi R.G. Shivas & L. Morin

Notes: Austropleospora is characterised by subglobose ascomata, bitunicate, 6−8-spored, cylindrical to clavate asci, and 2-seriateto overlapping uniseriate, ellipsoidal ascospores. The asexual morph is characterised by pycnidial, globose conidiomata, annellidic, discrete, cylindrical conidiogenous cells, and cylindrical to narrowly ellipsoidal conidia. Austropleospora differs from similar genera in Didymosphaeriaceae in its perithecioid ascomata containing numerous paraphyses and bitunicate asci with pigmented muriform ascospores. Morin et al. (2010) collected Hendersonia osteospermi on the same host and identified it as the asexual morph of A. osteospermi. The authors placed Austropleospora under Pleosporales based on phylogenetic analyses of ITS sequence data. Thambugala et al. (2014) accommodated Austropleospora in Pleosporaceae based on the clavate to cylindrical asci and ellipsoidal, yellowish brown ascospores. Later, Ariyawansa et al. (2015) excluded Austropleospora from Pleosporaceae and transferred it in Didymosphaeriaceae based on phylogenetic analyses of LSU, SSU, β-tubulin and ITS sequenced data. Jayasiri et al. (2019) recently introduced Austropleospora keteleeriae from decaying cone of Keteleeria fortunei (Osmundaceae). Austropleospora is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Didymosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Austropleospora are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
