Xenodidymella

Pathogenic or saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata pseudothecial, immersed or erumpent, globose to subglobose, solitary or confluent, ostiolate or poroid. Asci cylindrical to subclavate, 8-spored, bitunicate. Ascospores obovoid to oblong, clavate, ellipsoidal, sometimes slightly curved, hyaline, uniseptate, symmetrical or asymmetrical, constricted at the septum, biseriate. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, globose to subglobose, on agar surface or immersed, solitary or confluent, ostiolate. Pycnidial wall pseudoparenchymatous, 3–9-layered, outer wall pigmented. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, hyaline, smooth, globose to flask shaped, ampulliform. Conidia variable in shape, hyaline, smooth and thin-walled, i.e. ellipsoidal to allantoid, subcylindrical, oblong, pyriform, usually aseptate or occasionally uniseptate in vivo, mostly guttulate. Chlamydospores occasionally present, brown, intercalary, in spiral chains, unicellular, globose to subglobose (adapted from Chen et al. 2015).

Type species: Xenodidymella applanata (Niessl) Q. Chen & L. Cai

Notes: The sexual morph of Xenodidymella is characterised by globose to subglobose ascomata, cylindrical to subclavate asci, and obovoid to oblong ascospores. The asexual morph is characterised by pycnidial conidiomata, pseudoparenchymatous wall, phialidic conidiogenous cells, and ellipsoidal to allantoids conidia. Xenodidymella resembles Didymella in having similar conidia and can be distinguished based on DNA sequence data. Molecular markers available for Xenodidymella are ITS, LSU, SSU, Actin, BTUB and RPB2.
