Phomatodes

Phomatodes Qian Chen & L. Cai, in Chen et al., Stud. Mycol. 82: 191 (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 814062; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08230, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic or pathogenic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, globose to subglobose, on agar surface or immersed, solitary or confluent, ostiolate. Pycnidial wall pseudoparenchymatous, 3–5-layered, outer wall pigmented. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, hyaline, smooth, ampulliform to doliiform. Conidia cylindrical to allantoid, hyaline, thin-walled, smooth, aseptate, guttulate (adapted from Chen et al. 2015).

Type species: Phomatodes aubrietiae (Moesz) Q. Chen & L. Cai

Notes: Phomatodes was introduced based on phylogenetic analyses. Phomatodes aubrietiae was previously known as S. aubrietiae, found from Aubrietia gracilis in Albania. Phomatodes is characterised by cylindrical to allantoid aseptate conidia. Phomatodes resembles Phoma in having similar conidia but is phylogenetically distinct. Currently, Phomatodes is a distinct and well-supported genus in Didymellaceae. Molecular markers available for Phomatodes are ITS, LSU, Actin, BTUB and RPB2.
