Paramicrosphaeropsis
Paramicrosphaeropsis L.W. Hou, L. Cai & Crous, in Hou et al., Stud. Mycol. 96: 376 (2020).
Index Fungorum number: IF 833538; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11523, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic or pathogenic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, mostly semi-immersed, abundant, scattered or aggregated, mostly solitary, sometimes confluent, globose to subglobose, pale brown and the pycnidial wall hyaline at first, dark brown with age. Pycnidial wall pseudoparenchymatous, thin, multi-layered. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, hyaline, smooth, subglobose, ampulliform to lageniform. Conidia variable in shape, broad ellipsoidal, oblong or ovoid, thin-walled, smooth, hyaline at beginning, brown with age, aseptate, mostly guttulate (adapted from Hou et al. 2020).
Type species: Paramicrosphaeropsis ellipsoidea L.W. Hou, L. Cai & Crous
Notes: Paramicrosphaeropsis is characterised by pycnidial, mostly semi-immersed, abundant, scattered or aggregated conidioamta, phialidic, hyaline, smooth conidiogenous cells and broad ellipsoidal, oblong or ovoid conidia. Paramicrosphaeropsis morphologically resembles Neomicrosphaeropsis and Microsphaeropsis but is phylogenetically distinct (Hou et al. 2020). Paramicrosphaeropsis differs from all genera in Didymellaceae in producing pycnidia with a very thin and hyaline wall. Paramicrosphaeropsis is morphologically and phylogenetically a well-defined genus in Didymellaceae. Molecular markers available for Paramicrosphaeropsis include LSU, ITS, RPB2, BTUB.
