Nothophoma

Nothophoma Qian Chen & L. Cai, in Chen, Jiang, Zhang, Cai & Crous, Stud. Mycol. 82: 212 (2015)

Index Fungorum number: IF 831436; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08227, 11 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2021), 11 species with molecular data.

Endophytic, pathogenic or saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, globose to elongated, or irregular, superficial or immersed into the agar, solitary or confluent, ostiolate, sometimes with an elongated neck. Conidiomatal wall pseudoparenchymatous, multi-layered, outer wall pigmented. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, hyaline, smooth-walled, ampulliform to doliiform, sometimes flask-shaped. Conidia hyaline but incidentally brown, smooth- and thin-walled, aseptate, ovoid or ellipsoidal, eguttulate or guttulate. Chlamydospores elongated barrel-shaped, olivaceous brown, in chains (Adapted from Chen et al. 2015, Crous et al. 2017b).

Type species: Nothophoma infossa (Ellis & Everh.) Q. Chen & L. Cai

Notes: Nothophoma was introduced by Chen and Cai in Cai et al. (2015) with N. infossa as type species. Nothophoma is characterized by hyaline conidia and resembles Phoma. Nothophoma was erected to delineate a more natural classification for the Ascochyta-Didymella-Phoma complex. Nothophoma can be differentiated from similar genera based on DNA sequence data.
