Pathogenic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, solitary or confluent, globose to subglobose, semi-immersed or immersed in the agar, ostiolate. Pycnidial wall pseudoparenchymatous, multi-layered, outer layers pigmented. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, hyaline, smooth, globose, ampulliform to lageniform. Conidia cylindrical, bacilliform to fusiform, sometimes curved, hyaline, smooth- and thin-walled, aseptate, guttulate. Type species: Macroascochyta grandis L.W. Hou, L. Cai & Crous

Notes: Macroascochyta is characterised by pycnidial, solitary or confluent conidiomata, pseudoparenchymatous pycnidial wall, phialidic, hyaline, smooth, globose, ampulliform to lageniform conidiogenous cells, cylindrical, bacilliform to fusiform conidia and hyaline or pale brown, intercalary, unicellular, globose to subglobose chlamydospores. Macroascochyta is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and well-defined genus in Didymellaceae. Molecular marker available for Macroascochyta include RPB2.
