Pseudocoleophoma

Pseudocoleophoma Kaz. Tanaka & K. Hiray., in Tanaka et al., Stud. Mycol. 82: 89 (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 811300; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07534, 7 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 7 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead leaves. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered to grouped, immersed to erumpent, globose to subglobose in section. Ostiolar neck central, composed of subglobose dark brown cells. Ascomatal wall composed of polygonal to rectangular cells. Pseudoparaphyses numerous. Asci fissitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, short stalked, with 8 ascospores. Ascospores fusiform, uniseptate, smooth, with a conspicuous sheath. Asexual morph: Conidiomata coleophoma-like, pycnidial, subglobose. Conidiophores absent. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, doliiform to lageniform. Conidia cylindrical, hyaline, smooth (adapted from Tanaka et al. 2015).

Type species: Pseudocoleophoma calamagrostidis Kaz. Tanaka & K. Hiray.

Notes: Pseudocoleophoma is characterised by scattered to grouped ascomata, subglobose dark brown cells in ostiolar neck, cylindrical to clavate asci and fusiform, uniseptate ascospores. Hyde et al. (2016) added P. typhicola and Jayasiri et al. (2019) added P. bauhiniae to the genus. Recently, Phukhamsakda et al. (2020) added P. clematidis and Li et al. (2020) introduced P. rusci. The asexual morph of Pseudocoleophoma is similar to that of Coleophoma but differs in that the latter has paraphyses which are lacking in Pseudocoleophoma (De Gruyter et al. 2009, Tanaka et al. 2015). Pseudocoleophoma belongs to Pleosporales while Coleophoma belongs to Dothideales. Pseudocoleophoma is a distinct and well-supported genus in Dictyosporiaceae. Molecular markers available for Pseudocoleophoma are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
