Dendryphiella

Dendryphiella Bubák & Ranoj., Annls mycol. 12(4): 417 (1914).

Index Fungorum number: IF 7951; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08212, 14 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 7 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead branch, living leaves, leaf litter, dead or old herbaceous stems in terrestrial or submerged wood in freshwater habitats. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Colonies effuse, rubiginous, brown or black, hairy or velvety. Mycelium mostly immersed. Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, evenly or irregularly branched, with terminal or intercalary nodose swellings, mid to dark brown or reddish brown, smooth or verruculose. Conidiogenous cells polytretic, integrated, sympodial, reddish brown to pale brown, subspherical or clavate to subcylindrical, cicatrized, covered with some conidiogenous loci. Conidia solitary or catenate, acropleurogenous, simple, cylindrical or oblong, pale brown to mid brown, burnt sienna or olivaceous brown, septate, smooth or verruculose (adapted from Ellis 1971).

Type species: Dendryphiella interseminata (Berk. & Ravenel) Bubák

Notes: Dendryphiella is characterised by effuse, rubiginous colonies, macronematous, mononematous conidiophores, polytretic, integrated, sympodial conidiogenous cells and solitary or catenate, acropleurogenous conidia. Hughes (1953) treated Dendryphiella as a synonym of Dendryphion when he mentioned that the looser and longer branched conidiophores are insufficient to prove these two genera as distinct. Nicot (1958) added Dendryphiella arenaria to Dendryphiella and re-circumscribed Dendryphiella as a distinct genus. This treatment was followed by Ellis (1971). Ellis (1976) transferred Dendryphiella to Scolecobasidium based on morphology namely the polyblastic, denticulate conidiogenous cells that look like denticles when the conidia is separated (Ellis 1976). Several authors added new species to Dendryphiella (Nicot 1958, Reisinger 1968). Woudenberg et al. (2013) provided a phylogenetic tree based on SSU, LSU and RPB2 sequence data and transferred D. arenariae and D. salina to Paradendryphiella. Liu et al. (2017) provided taxonomic notes and a key to Dendryphiella species. Dendryphiella resembles Neodendryphiella in having non-cheiroid conidia but differs in having up to ten conidia in a chain. Dendryphiella is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Dictyosporiaceae. Molecular markers available for Dendryphiella are ITS, LSU, SSU, GAPDH, RPB2, TEF-1 and mtSSU.
