Semidelitschia
Semidelitschia Cain & Luck-Allen, Mycologia 61: 581 (1969).
Index Fungorum number: IF 4999; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08206, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Saprobic on dung. Sexual morph: Perithecia widely scattered, immersed, without stroma, unilocular, pyriform, ostiolate. Peridium (of perithecium) fairly thick, semicoriaceous, dark brown to black and opaque. Asci cylindrical, provided with a nonelastic outer wall rupturing above the center and permitting the internal membrane to elongate rather rapidly; apex of internal membrane with a small dome-shaped cap delimited by a constriction, not blueing in iodine. Paraphyses filamentous, numerous. Ascospores 1- celled, dark brown to almost black, varying from oval to broadly ellipsoid to oblong, at times angular, each surrounded by a hyaline, gelatinous sheath. Germinal slit extending full length of cell. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Cain & Luck-Allen 1969).
Type species: Semidelitschia agasmatica Cain & Luck-Allen
Notes: Semidelitschia is characterised by semi coriaceous, dark brown to black peridium, cylindrical asci, and 1-celled, dark brown to almost black ascospores. Cain and Luck-Allen (1969) assigned Semidelitschia to Sporormiaceae. Semidelitschia resembles Delitschia but can be differentiated based on the single-celled, dark ascospores with germination slits (Cain & Luck-Allen 1969). Barr (2000) re-circumscribed Sporormiaceae and transferred Semidelitschia to Delitschiaceae. This treatment was accepted by Eriksson (2006) and Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2007). Semidelitschia is a distinct genus in Delitschiaceae but molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections and DNA sequence data is needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Delitschia.
