Importance and distribution
There are 53 Fenestella epithets in Index Fungorum (2022), but some species have been transferred to other genera such as Camarosporium, Coryneum, Cucurbitaria, Dictyoporthe, Dyrithium, Myriangium, Neocucurbitaria, Parafenestella, Pleonectria, Sphaeronaema and Thyridium. Fenestella has a wide host range such as Alnus sp. (Betulaceae), Betula sp. (Betulaceae), Carpinus sp. (Betulaceae), Carya ovata (Juglandaceae), Castanea dentata (on dead limbs.) (Fagaceae), Crataegus laevigata (Rosaceae), Fagus sp. (Fagaceae), Lonicera pyrenaica (Caprifoliaceae), Lycium barbarum (Solanaceae), Quercus sp. (Fagaceae) and Theobroma cacao (Malvaceae).
