Cryptocoryneum

Cryptocoryneum Fuckel, Jb. nassau. Ver. Naturk. 23-24: 372 (1870) [1869-70].

Index Fungorum number: IF 7827; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08178, 16 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 8 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Asexual morph: Conidiomata sporodochial, pulvinate, often confluent, dark brown to black. Conidiophores arising from stromatic cells, simple, septate, hyaline to pale brown. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic, cylindrical to oblong, terminal, determinate, hyaline to pale brown. Conidia solitary, acrogenous, branched, cheiroid, with dark brown to black cap cells firmly united together, multi-armed; basal cells brown, cuneiform, smooth, thin-walled; arms cylindrical, pale brown, branched at base, smooth, multi-septate. Sexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hashimoto et al. 2017).

Type species: Cryptocoryneum fasciculatum Fuckel [= C. hysterioides (Corda) Peyronel]

Notes: Cryptocoryneum is characterised by sporodochial, pulvinate conidiomata, simple, septate, hyaline to pale brown conidiophores, monoblastic, cylindrical to oblong conidiogenous cells and solitary, acrogenous, branched, cheiroid conidia. Hashimoto et al. (2016) evaluated the taxonomic placement of Cryptocoryneum taxa based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses but could not resolve the familial position of Cryptocoryneum. Hashimoto et al. (2016) examined the holotype specimens of C. fasciculatum, C. hysterioides and Torula uniformis and reported that these species are conspecific. Hashimoto et al. (2016) designated C. hysterioides as the type species which has priority and provided a key to accepted species. The conidial size and the number of conidial arms and conidial septa are informative characters for species delimitation within Cryptocoryneum (Hashimoto et al. 2016). In the phylogenetic analysis of Hashimoto et al. (2017), Cryptocoryneum formed a distinct lineage from Lophiotremataceae hence the new family Cryptocoryneaceae was introduced to accommodate the genus. Cryptocoryneum differs from genera in Lophiotremataceae in having different asexual morph. Boonmee et al. (2021) added C. rosae to Cryptocoryneum based on phylogenetic analyses of combined SSU, LSU, ITS, TEF1 and RPB2 sequence data and morphology. Cryptocoryneum is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Cryptocoryneaceae. Molecular markers available for Cryptocoryneum are LSU, SSU, ITS, TEF1 and RPB2.
