Corynesporasca
Corynesporasca Sivan., Mycol. Res. 100(7): 786 (1996).
Index Fungorum number: IF 27579; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06662, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata non-ostiolate (cleistothecioid), spherical, solitary or aggregated, superficial or immersed in the agar. Peridium thin-walled, composed of brown cells forming a textura globosa or angularis. Hamathecium of paraphysoids. Asci obovoid, thick walled, bitunicate, deliquescent, 8-spored, arising from a hymenium and fasciculate among deliquescent paraphysoids. Ascospores pale to dark brown, smooth, 1-euseptate close to the centre and indistinctly more or less 1-distoseptate in the upper and lower cell, constricted at the mid euseptum, often asymmetric, with an indistinct transverse, hyaline area at or near the middle of the somewhat longer basal cell, with three lenticular to globose, granular lumena. Asexual morph: Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, solitary or caespitose, straight to flexuous, subhyaline to pale brown, smooth, cylindrical. Conidiogenous cells monotretric, integrated, terminal, percurrently proliferating. Conidia obclavate rostrate, subhyaline to pale brown, straight to curved, solitary, multi-distoseptate (adapted from Sivanesan 1996).
Type species: Corynesporasca caryotae Sivan.
Notes: Corynesporasca is characterised by non-ostiolate (cleistothecioid), spherical ascomata, obovoid, thick-walled, bitunicate asci, and pale to dark brown, smooth, 1-euseptate ascospores. The asexual morph is characterised by macronematous conidiophores, monotretric, integrated, terminal conidiogenous cells and obclavate or rostrate, subhyaline to pale brown conidia (Sivanesan 1781,1996). Corynespora resembles Testudina in having non-ostiolate ascomata with obovoid deliquescent bitunicate asci anduniseptate, brown ascospores but the former genus can be differentiated based on the cephalothecioid nature of the peridium and presence of cellular pseudoparaphyses (Hawksworth 1979; Hawksworth and Booth 1974). Corynesporasca also resembles Didymosphaeria in having brown, uniseptate ascospores but differs in that the latter has symmetric ascospores which are smooth to echinulate and uniseriately arranged inside the cylindrical asci and the ascomata are immersed and clypeate while those of Corynesporasca are not superficial and cleistothecioid. Corynesporasca also resembles Massariaceae in having asci with a wide ocular chamber but differs in that the asci of the former genus lack a refractive ring. Hyde et al. (2013) and Hongsanan et al. (2020a) did not follow the treatment of Sivanesan (1996) and reported that Corynespora is polyphyletic based on previous studies (Tanaka et al. 2005c, 2015; Schoch et al. 2009a; Voglmayr and Jaklitsch 2017). Seifert et al. (2011) reported many Corynespora-like asexual morphs in several other genera. Corynesporasca is accommodated in its own family Corynesporascaceae based on morphology (Sivanesan 1996). Corynesporasca is a distinct genus in Corynesporascaceae but molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections of Corynesporasca are required.
