Biatriospora

Biatriospora K.D. Hyde & Borse, Mycotaxon 26: 263 (1986).

Index Fungorum number: IF 25748; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08167, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascocarps solitary or gregarious, large, subglobose to pyriform, immersed in the substrate, ostiolate, periphysate, papillate, carbonaceous, black. Pseudoparaphyses numerous, simple, think, branched, hyaline embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, pedunculated, bitunicate, thick-walled, with an apical apparatus, developing in the hymenium at the base of the ascocarp. Ascospores fusiform, dark-brown, septate towards each end, non-septate in the centre, with apical globose refractive chambers or appendages. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hyde & Borse 1986).

Type species: Biatriospora marina K.D. Hyde & Borse.

Notes: Biatriospora is characterised by solitary or gregarious ascocarps, numerous, simple hyaline paraphyses embedded in a gelatinous matrix, and fusiform, dark-brown ascospores with apical globose refractive chambers or appendages. Biatriospora resembles Lulworthia spp. in having conical end chambers (Kohlmeyer & Schatz 1985, Hyde & Borse 1986). Kolarik et al. (2017) added four new species of Biatriospora reported as endophytes of woody plants in temperate forests of Czech Republic and Amazonia. Biatriospora is a distinct and well-defined genus in Biatriosporaceae. Molecular markers available for Biatriospora are ITS, LSU, SSU, BTUB, RPB2 and TEF-1.
