Mycomicrothelia

Mycomicrothelia Keissl., Rabenh. Krypt. -Fl., Edn 2 (Leipzig) 9(1.2): 7 (1936).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3328; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08163, 8 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Lichenized on host. Sexual morph: Thallus extensive, with irregular punctiform apothecia confluent, flattened. Asci clubbed-shaped, 8-spored. Ascospores brown clavate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Keissler 1936).

Type species: Mycomicrothelia macularis (Hampe ex A. Massal.) Keissl.

Notes: Hawksworth (1985) referred Mycomicrothelia to Arthopyreniaceae s. lat.  and accepted 26 species. Mycomicrothelia resembles Arthopyrenia in having brown ascospores but Arthopyrenia has thicker and less branched and anastomosing pseudoparaphyses (Harris 1995). Mycomicrothelia also resembles members of Trypetheliaceae in having similar hamathecium characters but differs in having thin-walled, dark brown ascospores, while in Trypetheliaceae they are mainly thick-walled with diamond-shaped lumina and hyaline (Nelsen et al. 2011). Mycomicrothelia differs from other lichenized Dothideomycetes in having brown ascospores while other lichenized taxa have hyaline ascospores (Nelsen et al. 2011; Aptroot and Lücking 2016). Aptroot and Lücking (2016) reinstated the name Bogoriella for the tropical, lichenized Mycomicrothelia species characterised by euseptate, brown ascospores. In the phylogenetic analysis of Lücking et al. (2016), taxa in Mycomicrothelia s. lat. did not form a monophyletic clade and they transferred Mycomicrothelia oleosa to a new genus Novomicrothelia based on its inspersed hamathecium and ascospore wall invaginations and phylogenetic evidence Mycomicrothelia is currently a distinct genus in Arthopyreniaceae but more collections with sequence data are needed to confirm the status of the genus and to test whether Mycomicrothelia is monophyletic or must be accommodated in its own family.
