Aquasubmersa

Aquasubmersa K.D. Hyde & Huang Zhang, Cryptog. Mycol. 33 (3): 340 (2012).

Index Fungorum number: IF 800875; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07118, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Habit on submerged plant substrate. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Pycnidia subglobose to ellipsoidal, dark brown to black, semi-immersed to superficial, solitary, unilocular, with outer layer of wall brown and cells occluded, with the inner layers of the wall hyaline and elongated cells. Conidiophores reduced. Conidiogenous cells determinate, discrete, lageniform, hyaline, smooth, formed from the inner cells of the pycnidial wall. Conidia holoblastic, unicellular, ellipsoidal, hyaline, thin walled, guttulate (adapted from Zhang et al. 2012).

Type species: Aquasubmersa mircensis Huang Zhang & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Aquasubmersa is characterised by subglobose to ellipsoidal pycnidia, discrete, lageniform, hyaline conidiogenous cells, and holoblastic, unicellular, ellipsoidal conidia. Aquasubmersa resembles Diplodia in having hyaline and unicellular conidia but differs in that the conidia in Diplodia are two-celled and brown at maturity while the pycnidial wall in Aquasubmersa is thinner and the conidia are hyaline (Lazzizera et al. 2008). Aquasubmersa is a distinct and well-defined genus in Aquasubmersaceae. More collections are needed to verify the status of the genus because the family Aquasubmersaceae clusters with other families in the Pleosporales with poor support. Molecular markers available for Aquasubmersa are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
