Purpureofaciens
Purpureofaciens W. Dong, H. Zhang & K.D. Hyde, in Dong et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-020-00463-5, [55] (2020).
Index Fungorum number: IF 557804; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08717, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on decaying wood submerged in freshwater. Sexual morph: Ascomata black, scattered, or gregarious, semi-immersed to superficial, conical, flattened at the basal region, stain the substrate purple and produce reddish pigmentation at the apex, coriaceous, with a large, protuberant, ostiolate papilla. Peridium of unequal thickness, poorly developed at the base, composed of reddish brown, large cells of textura angularis. Pseudoparaphyses numerous, trabeculate, filiform, hyaline, embedded in a hyaline gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical, pedicellate, apically rounded. Ascospores uniseriate, curved, olivaceous, septate, ellipsoidal with acute ends, guttulate, thin-walled, smooth, surrounded by a thin mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Dong et al. 2020).
Type species: Purpureofaciens aquatica W. Dong, H. Zhang & K.D. Hyde
Notes: Purpureofaciens resembles Flammeascoma in having reddish pigmentation at the apex of ascomata but differs in having conical ascomata with a large, protuberant, ostiolate papilla, cylindrical asci and ellipsoidal, olivaceous ascospores. Purpureofaciens is a distinct genus in Anteagloniaceae. Molecular markers available for Purpureofaciens include LSU, ITS and TEF-1.
