Neolophiotrema
Neolophiotrema G.C. Ren & K.D. Hyde, in Ren et al., Phytotaxa 482(1): 28 (2021).
Index Fungorum number: IF 557889; Facesoffungi number: FoF 04862, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on decaying wood. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered, immersed, coriaceous, globose to subglobose, brown to dark-brown, with central ostiole. Ostioles short papillate, produced pink pigment in the inner layer of the ostioles. Peridium thin to thick walled, outer wall composed of several layers, brown to dark-brown, thin-walled cells of textura angularis, inner wall of loose cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising numerous, anastomosing, hyaline, filiform, branched, septate, cellular pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical clavate, pedicellate. Ascospores overlapping uni to bi-seriate, 2-celled, broadly fusiform with rounded ends, straight to slightly curved, 1(–3)-septate, hyaline, smooth-walled, with a primary septum nearly median, constricted at the septum, with obvious guttules, surrounded by a wide gelatinous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Ren et al. 2021).
Type species: Neolophiotrema xiaokongense G.C. Ren & K.D. Hyde
Notes: Neolophiotrema is characterised by scattered, immersed, coriaceous ascomata, short papillate ostioles, branched, septate, cellular pseudoparaphyses, cylindrical clavate, pedicellate asci and 2-celled, broadly fusiform ascospores. Neolophiotrema differs from Anteaglonium in that the latter has hysterothecial ascomata, carbonaceous peridium and obovoid two-celled ascospores with one or both ends obtuse or fusiform ascospores with acuminate apices (Mugambi & Huhndorf 2009, Wanasinghe et al. 2020) while Neolophiotrema has coriaceous ascomata, and largely fusiform ascospores with rounded ends. Neolophiotrema differs from Flammeascoma in having coriaceous ascomata, with narrow cellular pseudoparaphyses while the latter genus has trabeculate pseudoparaphyses and carbonaceous ascomata. Neolophiotrema has also been compared with Purpureofaciens in having hyaline, overlapping bi-seriate, broadly fusiform ascospores while the latter genus has olivaceous, uni-seriate, ellipsoidal ascospores (Dong et al. 2020). Neolophiotrema is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Anteagloniaceae. Molecular markers available for Neolophiotrema includes LSU, SSU, ITS, TEF-1 and RPB2.
