Pseudomassariosphaeria

Pseudomassariosphaeria Phukhams., Ariyaw., Camporesi & K.D. Hyde, in Ariyawansa et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-015-0346-5, [9] (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 551367; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00931, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 3 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead stems. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary, globose, erumpent or rarely superficial, black to dark brown, smooth-walled, papillate, ostiolate with periphyses. Peridium comprising two strata, outer stratum composed of 3–5 layers of light to dark brown cells of textura angularis, inner stratum comprising 1–2 layers of hyaline flattened cells. Hamathecium comprising 1.2– 2.6 μm wide, filiform, anastomosing, hyaline, transversely septate, long, cellular pseudoparaphyses, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci (7-)8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, short pedicellate, apically rounded with an ocular chamber. Ascospores 2-seriateor overlapping, hyaline, fusiform to lunate, narrow towards the apex, 8–9-septate, constricted at septum, granulate, surrounded by a wide mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Ariyawansa et al. 2015).

Type species: Pseudomassariosphaeria bromicola Phukhams., Ariyaw., Camporesi & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Pseudomassariosphaeria is characterised by solitary, globose, erumpent ascomata, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical to clavate asci, and hyaline, fusiform to lunate ascospores. Pseudomassariosphaeria is closely related to Murispora rubicunda with weak support in the family Amniculicolaceae (Ariyawansa et al. 2015). Pseudomassariosphaeria resembles Murispora in having erumpent ascomata, cylindro-clavate asci and pale or reddish brown fusiform ascospores. Pseudomassariosphaeria differs from Murispora in that the ascomata of the latter genus stain the woody substrate purple which is not the case for Pseudomassariosphaeria. Pseudomassariosphaeria is a distinct and well-supported genus in Amniculicolaceae. Molecular marker available for Pseudomassariosphaeria are ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1.
