Index Fungorum number: IF 515473; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08156, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic in freshwater habitat. Sexual morph: Ascomata medium-sized, scattered or in small groups, immersed, with a slightly protruding elongated papilla, ostiolate, lenticular, stain the substrate purple. Peridium thin. Hamathecium of dense, long cellular pseudoparaphyses, septate. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindro-clavate, with short furcate pedicels. Ascospores 2-3-seriate, narrowly fusoid, somewhat curved, reddish brown, multi-septate, slightly constricted at the primary septum. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zhang et al. 2012).
Type species: Neomassariosphaeria typhicola (P. Karst.) Y. Zhang ter, J. Fourn. & K.D. Hyde
Notes: Neomassariosphaeria was introduced based on phylogenetic analysis. Neomassariosphaeria typhicola previously known as Massariosphaeria typhicola clustered together with M. phaeospora in a distinct clade outside the family Amniculicolaceae. Neomassariosphaeria is characterised by medium-sized, scattered ascomata, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindro-clavate asci, and narrowly fusoid, somewhat curved ascospores. Zhang et al. (2009) placed Neomassariosphaeria in Amniculicolaceae based on the phragmosporous ascospores. On the contrary, in the phylogenetic analyses of AbdelAziz and Abdel-Wahab (2010), Hirayama et al. (2010) and Raja et al. (2013), N. typhicola formed a distinct clade within the family Lindgomycetaceae, sister to the Lolia clade. Based on previous phylogenetic evidence, Ariyawansa et al. (2015) transferred Neomassariosphaeria to Lindgomycetaceae and transferred M. phaeospora to another genus Pseudomassariosphaeria. Neomassariosphaeria is a distinct genus in Amniculicolaceae but more specimens need to be sequenced to confirm the status of the genus within the family. Molecular markers available for Neomassariosphaeria are ITS, LSU and SSU.
