Amniculicola

Amniculicola Y. Zhang & K.D. Hyde, Mycol. Res. 112(10): 1189 (2008).

Index Fungorum number: IF 511328; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08154, 6 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 5 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary, scattered, or in small groups, initially immersed, becoming erumpent, to nearly superficial, globose, subglobose to conical, wall black, roughened; apex well-differentiated into two tuberculate flared lips surrounding a slit-like ostiole. Peridium thin, 2-layered, outer layer composed of small heavily pigmented thick-walled cells of textura angularis, inner layer composed of hyaline thin-walled cells of textura angularis. Pseudoparaphyses trabeculate, embedded in mucilage, ramified between and above the asci. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical to narrowly fusiform, short pedicellate, with an ocular chamber and a small apical apparatus. Ascospores fusiform, hyaline, 2-celled, constricted at the median septum, surrounded by an irregular hyaline gelatinous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zhang et al. 2008).

Type species: Amniculicola lignicola Y. Zhang ter & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Amniculicola is characterised by solitary, scattered ascomata, fissitunicate, cylindrical to narrowly fusiform asci and fusiform, hyaline, 2-celled ascospores. Amniculicola resembles Ostropella and Xenolophium but can be distinguished in the ascus shape, presence of a short pedicle, and a thin peridium. Amniculicola is characterised by cylindrical to narrowly fusiform ascus while those of Ostropella and Xenolophium is clavate and long-stipitate (Huhndorf 1993, Zhang et al. 2008). Amniculicola has a pedicel shorter than 30 μm whereas of Ostropella and Xenolophium has a pedicel which is longer than 50 μm (Huhndorf 1993, Zhang et al. 2008). Amniculicola has narrower peridium measuring rarely more than 60 μm (not including the apex), while Ostropella and Xenolophium have a peridium wider than 100 μm (Huhndorf 1993, 1998, Zhang et al. 2008). Amniculicola is a strongly supported genus in Amniculicolaceae. Molecular markers available for Amniculicola are ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1.
